Even though women have made important strides in asserting their equality with men, double standards still exist, in particular when it comes to business. While a male leader will not surprise or irritate anyone, there is a tendency for women in leadership positions to be regarded as being bossy. Today, we would like to take a look at Sheryl Sandberg’s latest initiative, a campaign called BanBossy. Read below to see how the Facebook COO is trying to change the misconceptions and prejudices surrounding female leaders once and for all.

The gender stereotypes start early on

Whatmost of us might not have known, at least until Sandberg released her program, is that women start to shy away from leadership positions early on, sometimes even beginning in elementary school. Girls learn at a young age that, if they assert themselves, they risk being called bossy or pushy, which is why most of them will prefer to stay out of the spotlight. What’s the biggest issue with this? It’s a trend that can stick around well into adulthood, preventing women from reaching their true potential. These, as well as other useful titbits of information are offered at BanBossy.com and you can easily do your part and spread the word by sharing it on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, or Google+.

Encouraging ladies to take a stand

BanBossy’s mission is to empower women and make them realize that they truly deserve the leadership position they’ve secretly been dreaming of. The website offers tons of educative tips and tricks that can help women achieve their ambitions. They have leadership tips for girls wishing to finally step outside their comfort zone, tips for parents wishing to encourage their children, tips for teachers wishing to eliminate gender bias in class, as well as tips for women who are already occupying a leadership position. All of the programmes are downloadable for free and can very well represent the first step your daughter, sister, mother, or even you need in order to succeed.

Banning “bossy”

Apart from offering great insight into leadership, one of the most important things this campaign is trying to achieve is to raise awareness and, hopefully, put a stop to one of the most damaging gender stereotypes. Even though there is a long way to go in order to change the mentality of the general public, BanBossy is a great initiative that may very well change the future of little girls everywhere. By enlisting the help of female celebrities and entrepreneurs, BanBossyis sending a loud and clear message. However, they can’t do it without your help. Do your part by sharing the stories and joining in the activities. And if you’re a womanyearning to take the leadership position you deserve, it’s time to get out of your shell and shine.
